Blackjack Basics

Blackjack is available in virtually every casino in the world, and certainly in all casinos on the web. Although the game may look complicated, it's ultimately just about being able to count to 21.

The game begins with each player posting a bet to get two cards that are visible to all. The dealer also gives himself two cards, but shows only one of them. It does not matter that the other players can see your cards, because you only play against the house in blackjack.

The goal is to get closer to 21 than the dealer without coming across. The cards have face value on them, except Jacks, Queens and Kings are worth 10 and aces are worth 1 or 11. If your two cards do not reach a value that you think can beat the dealer (based on her exposed cards) you can choose to take another card. You can continue to hit until you have 21 or more, but you happen to get more, you are "bust" and lose the bet.

When you are satisfied with the grand total, you choose to stay and it will be the next player's turn. When the dealer's turn to act featured her other cards. Is the sum of the cards below 16, the dealer must take another card, but the sum is 17 or more, she must stay. If the dealer has a "soft" 17, which means the A6, which is worth 7 or 17, the house rules decide if the dealer must take another card or not. If the dealer "busts" wins all the players who do not themselves become bust.

If not, the players with a higher total wins even money. If it becomes equal it's a push. The player indicates whether he wants another card by tapping the cards or the table or waving his hand over the cards if he wants to stay.

Other rules: The player has the opportunity to "double", i.e. to double the bet and get a card, or "split" - to use two cards of equal value for the formation of two new hands - which also means a doubling of the bet. There is also an opportunity to buy "insurance" if the dealer has an ace upcard. Anyone who buys insurance are even money even if the dealer has blackjack and lose half a bet if the dealer has blackjack (except what was won or lost on the hand).
